The Vikings have gained additional time to devise a strategy to sidestep the dead money associated with running back Aaron Jones’s contract as they approach their 2025 salary cap.
Last year, Jones inked a one-year agreement with the team, which included a void year to distribute the cap impact. Although the contract was originally scheduled to void on Monday, Field Yates from ESPN reports that the Vikings and Jones have mutually decided to extend the void date to March 11, just a day before the opening of the new league year.
If Jones’s contract voids, it would lead to a dead cap hit of $3.2 million for the Vikings. Delaying the void date offers both parties the opportunity to negotiate an extension that can help the Vikings avoid this financial burden.
In the 2024 season, Jones recorded 255 carries for 1,138 yards and five touchdowns, in addition to making 51 receptions for 408 yards and one touchdown.
