Pope Francis’ health has reportedly deteriorated significantly, as he was in critical condition following a severe “asthmatic respiratory crisis” on Saturday. The Vatican disclosed that the 88-year-old pontiff required “high flows of oxygen” and a blood transfusion, raising alarms regarding his well-being.

The latest updates from the Vatican indicated a worsening of Pope Francis’ condition since Friday evening, when he was also classified as critical. Officials confirmed, “The pope is not out of danger,” which has stirred concern over his recovery.

As Francis enters his second week in the hospital, many are anxious about his future—whether he will overcome this challenge, sadly pass away, or recover but with lasting health complications. His lung health has already faced chronic issues, and several cardinals have begun to discuss the likelihood of Francis resigning, reminiscent of the decision made by his predecessor, Benedict XVI, in 2013.

Should the pope pass away or choose to resign, the church’s cardinals would convene a conclave to elect a new leader. In a recent interview with the Milan-based Corriere della Sera, Cardinal Pietro Parolin, who serves as the pope’s secretary of state, dismissed the rampant speculation surrounding Francis’ resignation, emphasizing that the primary focus should be on “the Holy Father’s health and his return to the Vatican.”
