Nightdive Studios has revealed its exciting remaster of the iconic action RPG System Shock 2 for the Nintendo Switch, now officially titled System Shock 2: 25th Anniversary Remaster.

Initially branded as System Shock 2: Enhanced Edition, this revamped version is set to modernize Irrational Games and Looking Glass Studios’ 1999 survival horror sequel. The remaster was first announced back in 2019, following Nightdive’s previous re-releases in the mid-2010s. While it may seem unusual to label it as a ’25th Anniversary Remaster’ after the anniversary has passed, we believe that quality gameplay speaks for itself!

Though a specific release date has yet to be disclosed, the announcement confirms that it “will soon be available” on PC and consoles, with an official date expected at GDC 2025 during the Future Game Show Spring Showcase live stream.

For now, feel free to check out the previous trailer below, as well as some intriguing details from the press release:

In the year 2114, you awaken from cryo-sleep aboard the FTL ship Von Braun, but you have no recollection of who you are or why you are there… and something has gone horribly wrong. Hybrid mutants and lethal robots patrol the dimly lit corridors, while the frantic shouts of the remaining crew echo through the ship’s cold metal walls. A rogue AI named SHODAN, hell-bent on exterminating humanity, has taken control, and it’s your mission to stop her. Navigate through the eerie passageways of the forsaken Von Braun and immerse yourself in the richly woven narrative and environment. Explore deck by deck to uncover the terrifying fate of the ship and her crew.

For those who might be new to the game, it features design contributions from Ken Levine, the mind behind the BioShock series, and is regarded as one of the greats in PC gaming history from the late ’90s. Its blend of survival horror within the action RPG framework has left a lasting impact, influencing many titles to follow, including, most notably, Levine’s own BioShock series.

Nightdive Studios has established a reputation for expertly reimagining classic games, and we are eager to see how they approach this beloved title for console players.
