The Trump administration has reversed its decision on funding and staffing reductions for a federal health initiative aimed at aiding survivors of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. This change comes in response to bipartisan criticism regarding the initial cuts.

In a recent statement, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), which administers the World Trade Center Health Program, announced the restoration of two research grants that had previously been eliminated. Additionally, employees who had been dismissed just days earlier will be reinstated to their roles.

John Feal, a retired construction worker from Long Island and a key advocate for establishing the program in the years following his injury during the World Trade Center cleanup efforts, expressed his approval of the administration’s decision. “The White House underestimated us,” he remarked.

Feal and fellow supporters mobilized against the funding cuts after the administration’s decision to terminate 16 employees essential for managing medical treatment for those affected by toxins related to the attacks.

The program’s workforce was reduced by approximately 20%, resulting in significant concerns among advocates, congressional members, and the dismissed workers. Many claimed that the firings, in addition to those who accepted buyouts, would impede new patient enrollment and limit the availability of staff for patient care, diagnoses, and treatments.

This recent development reflects a significant shift in policy and highlights the ongoing commitment to supporting the health and well-being of those impacted by the tragic events of 9/11.
