With the Boston Red Sox’s recent acquisition of Alex Bregman, the team now faces a pivotal dilemma.

Who will fill the role of third baseman?

Rafael Devers has held that position since making his debut with the Red Sox in 2017. It would require an extraordinary situation to displace Devers from third base, but Bregman is indeed an exceptional player. A two-time World Series champion, he excelled at third base for nearly ten years with the Houston Astros.

If it were up to Triston Casas, he would advocate for keeping Devers at third, while shifting Bregman to play on the right side of the infield.

“I truly believe that third base is Raffy Devers’ position. He has proven himself there consistently, and he continues to improve,” Casas shared with reporters on Tuesday, as noted by NESN. “His defensive skills have enhanced every year. While we can’t predict the future, we can anticipate that it includes Raffy Devers. His defensive prowess keeps him agile, and his performance at the plate flourishes thanks to his position. He’s committed to it and doesn’t want to play anywhere else. He will compete for that spot against any younger players or newcomers. To me, he stands out as the best third baseman in the league, and I wouldn’t choose anyone else for that role. He should be at third base.”

Casas added: “I believe Bregman is suited for second base. His athleticism will facilitate a smooth transition, and I’m confident that Trevor (Story) will excel as shortstop.”

On Monday, Devers made it clear that he intends to remain at third base and is not interested in any alternative roles within the Red Sox, including a full-time designated hitter position. Manager Alex Cora has yet to finalize any defensive lineups, preferring to observe how spring training unfolds before making definitive decisions.

However, a positional conflict is unlikely to create tension within the Red Sox locker room. Cora mentioned on Tuesday that Devers and Bregman quickly established a positive rapport after Bregman’s arrival.
