

On a tragic Saturday morning, an officer was fatally shot while responding to an active gunman at UPMC Memorial Hospital located in York County, Pennsylvania.
Officer Andrew Duarte of the West York Borough Police tragically lost his life during the incident, which also claimed the life of the gunman, as confirmed by authorities.
“Our West York Borough community is experiencing a heartbreaking loss today due to a devastating mutual aid call that occurred earlier in West Manchester Township at UPMC,” the police department expressed in a statement shared on social media. “Our hearts ache for the innocent life lost.”
The first 911 call regarding a threat to the hospital was received at 10:43 a.m., according to Ted Czech, the public information officer for York County Office of Emergency Management/York County 911. Details about the ongoing investigation have not yet been fully disclosed, Czech added.
Troopers from the Pennsylvania State Police, along with local law enforcement, responded swiftly to the shooting incident at the hospital.
The State Police confirmed that the shooter is deceased and stated that there is no remaining threat to the community, noting that no patients were injured during the incident.
UPMC Memorial also issued a statement confirming that no patients were harmed and assuring that the “hospital is now secure.”
In a press briefing on Saturday afternoon, Governor Josh Shapiro stated that both State Police and the Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency were on-site for the situation.
“I have been informed about the tragic shooting at UPMC Memorial Hospital in York County, and I am en route to the scene,” he remarked. “Please follow the instructions of local authorities and avoid the area. We will provide further updates as they become available.”
