Tesla, led by CEO Elon Musk, who has been advising former President Trump on strategies to reduce government expenditure, is positioned to secure a lucrative deal to provide armored versions of its Cybertruck to the State Department, based on public records.
The State Department’s procurement outlook for 2025 reveals a projected budget of $400 million allocated for armored Tesla vehicles. While the exact model isn’t specified, the resilient Cybertruck, constructed from high-strength stainless steel, stands out as the ideal candidate for this initiative.
Elon Musk has previously contributed over $250 million to Trump’s campaign and was named the head of a cost-reduction initiative termed the Department of Government Efficiency, reflecting his ongoing influence in governmental financial matters.
The potential acquisition of Cybertrucks—an unconventional choice for government armored transport—could spark concerns over conflicts of interest. This is especially relevant given Musk’s vocal stance against what he describes as excessive government spending.
On his social media platform X, Musk has criticized the federal government for its alleged inefficiencies and corruption. Recently, he highlighted what he deemed exorbitantly priced coffee cups and soap dispensers procured by the Pentagon.
Neither Tesla nor the State Department responded to immediate inquiries regarding this matter.
Musk is already recognized as a significant supplier to the government. His affiliated companies have obtained $13 billion in federal contracts over the past five years, with SpaceX, the aerospace enterprise he founded, receiving the majority of this funding, solidifying its position as one of the top government contractors.
