OpenAI’s CEO Sam Altman recently criticized Elon Musk, suggesting that Musk’s actions stem from a “position of insecurity” after he proposed acquiring the artificial intelligence firm.

During an interview with Bloomberg Television at the Paris AI Summit on Tuesday, Altman stated, “It seems his entire life is driven by insecurity.” He expressed sympathy for Musk, mentioning, “I don’t believe he is a fulfilled person,” according to multiple U.S. media outlets, including the New York Post and The Hill.

Altman emphasized that OpenAI is “not for sale,” countering Musk’s unsolicited offer made alongside a group of investors. “This is just another one of his strategies to disrupt us,” he remarked.

When queried about Musk’s intentions regarding the offer, Altman speculated, “He’s probably just attempting to hinder our progress.”

This exchange follows a recent $97.4 billion bid from Musk and investors to acquire the nonprofit entity overseeing OpenAI, intensifying the longstanding tension between Musk and Altman over the trajectory of artificial intelligence.

Altman declined the acquisition proposal, humorously suggesting, “We’re not interested, but how about we purchase Twitter for $9.74 billion instead?”

Musk’s brief response was simply: “Swindler.”

Reports from the New York Post indicate that Musk’s attorney, Marc Toberoff, confirmed that Musk has gathered support from notable investors, including firms like Joe Lonsdale’s 8VC, Valor Equity Partners, Baron Capital, Atreides Management, and Vy Capital, as well as Endeavor CEO Ari Emanuel.

This acquisition attempt may complicate OpenAI’s endeavor to secure a $40 billion funding round led by the Japanese conglomerate SoftBank, which has estimated the company’s value at $300 billion—placing it among the world’s most valuable private entities, alongside SpaceX and ByteDance, the parent company of TikTok.
