Ryan Preece faced another dramatic rollover during the Daytona 500 on Sunday night, voicing concerns that the risks for NASCAR drivers are escalating.

The incident occurred in one of the race’s most significant crashes, just five laps from the finish. The chaos initiated at the front of the pack when Christopher Bell, leading the outside lane, was bumped by Cole Custer. As Bell spun into the outer wall, Preece, who was positioned around 12th place and several rows behind, found himself with no way to evade the unfolding disaster.

Upon impact, Preece collided with the left front of Bell’s vehicle, causing his car to launch into the air at an alarming angle. Unfortunately, it didn’t regain control; instead, it flipped over, landing on its roof before finally sliding onto the banking and flipping back onto its side.

“I’m unsure if it’s the diffuser or something else that makes these cars feel as fragile as a sheet of plywood in the wind,” Preece remarked. “When my car took off and everything went silent, my thoughts turned immediately to my daughter. I’m fortunate to have walked away, but we’re dangerously close to a situation where someone might not.”

“It’s disheartening to end the race this way,” he added.

Preece and the No. 60 RFK Racing team ultimately secured a 32nd-place finish, having previously led for six laps.

This marks the second time in under two years that Preece has found himself airborne at Daytona. Back in the summer of 2023, he was spun out from the middle of the pack and his Ford left the ground after crossing the nose of Chase Briscoe, rolling multiple times across the grass.

Following that incident, NASCAR removed all the grass from the backstretch, and during the Daytona 500, Preece was the only driver to flip over.

“We had a strong car,” Preece noted. “Honestly, I’m not even sure what transpired in front of me, as I haven’t viewed the replay. I was just in line, pushing, and as we approach the end of these races, everyone tends to be aggressive — it’s just the nature of the situation.
