Pope Francis is currently battling a “polymicrobial infection” affecting his respiratory system, necessitating an adjustment to his hospital treatment, according to a recent announcement from the Vatican. The tests have revealed a “complex clinical picture” for one of the oldest popes in the history of the Catholic Church.

The test results indicated that the 88-year-old pontiff, who has faced numerous lung-related health challenges, will need “adequate hospitalization” as his treatment plan is modified.

“Recent test findings have confirmed the presence of a polymicrobial infection in the respiratory tract, prompting a revision in treatment,” stated the Vatican in an official communication.

“All conducted tests suggest a complicated clinical scenario that will necessitate appropriate hospitalization.”

Vatican spokesperson Matteo Bruni reported that earlier on Monday, Pope Francis had a good night’s sleep, read newspapers, and enjoyed breakfast.

Last week, the pope was admitted to a Roman hospital for “diagnostic tests” concerning his respiratory infection. The Vatican later confirmed his stay in the Agostino Gemelli Polyclinic in the Italian capital and noted that he had canceled all upcoming meetings for the following three days, including the general audience set for Wednesday.

This past Sunday, he missed leading the weekly Angelus prayer, marking only the second occurrence of such an absence during his nearly 12-year papacy.

Physicians have recommended “complete rest” for the pope, who had been engaged in a demanding schedule of meetings and public events prior to his hospitalization.

In his earlier years, the Argentinian pope suffered from serious pneumonia and underwent surgery to remove part of one lung. Recently, he has experienced two falls and has been using a wheelchair to assist with mobility challenges.

Furthermore, Pope Francis has a history of diverticulitis, a condition that can lead to inflammation or infection of the colon. In 2021, he underwent surgery to remove a portion of his colon.

This is an evolving story and will be updated as new information arises.
