OpenAI has removed a webpage that outlined its dedication to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI). The link previously directing to “https://openai.com/commitment-to-dei/” now forwards users to “https://openai.com/building-dynamic-teams/,” a section focusing on individuals from “varied backgrounds” but notably omitting the term “diversity.”
The previous content highlighted the company’s ongoing commitment to “investing in diversity, equity, and inclusion.” It emphasized OpenAI’s seriousness about this initiative and its aim to “continuously enhance our efforts in fostering an equitable, diverse, and inclusive workplace,” a statement preserved by the Internet Archive and referenced in a CNN article from 2023.
While the exact timing of this update is unclear, indication suggests it occurred quite recently. The previous DEI webpage was referenced in an ABC News article that was published on January 22. By January 27, OpenAI had unveiled the new “building dynamic teams” webpage, indicating a swift transition.
The new content states, “At OpenAI, we acknowledge that the best ideas surface when examined, discussed, and refined by individuals with diverse experiences, backgrounds, and perspectives. We foster a culture of curiosity where ideas can be tested and scrutinized, rather than simply accepted.”
OpenAI has yet to respond to inquiries regarding this website change and whether it reflects any shifts in the company’s internal practices. However, their commitment to ensuring “fairness” in model training to mitigate social biases remains active on their website.
OpenAI is not the only organization reevaluating its approach to DEI language, as these terms increasingly face significant political and legal challenges. Recently, Attorney General Pam Bondi directed the Department of Justice to “investigate, eliminate, and penalize” DEI programs deemed unlawful in private sector entities receiving federal funding.
In the last month, major corporations like Meta, Google, and Amazon have also revised or removed aspects of their DEI strategies. Notably, both Google and Amazon have eliminated references to diversity and inclusion in their latest 10-K filings.
OpenAI is collaborating with the government in various ways. It has secured government contracts and introduced a chatbot for government agencies.
