This week, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced a nationwide recall of canned tuna due to potential botulism contamination. The affected products, sourced from Tri-Union Seafoods, are sold under various brand names including Genova, Van Camp’s, H-E-B, and Trader Joe’s.
The recall spans numerous states, impacting Trader Joe’s locations in New York, New Jersey, and 16 additional states, along with Washington, D.C.
Consumers may also find these products at major retailers like Costco, Harris Teeter, Publix, H-E-B, Kroger, Safeway, Walmart, and various independent stores across the United States.
Tri-Union Seafoods has stated that a defect in the ‘easy open’ pull can lid might compromise the seal’s integrity over time, risking leakage or contamination with clostridium botulinum, which can lead to serious foodborne illness.
Both the FDA and Tri-Union Seafoods have advised consumers to refrain from consuming the recalled tuna, even if it appears normal in appearance or odor. Anyone who experiences illness after consuming the affected tuna is urged to seek immediate medical attention.
As of now, there have been no reported illnesses related to this recall, which has been initiated as a precautionary measure to safeguard consumer health.
Botulism, while uncommon, is a severe illness that can cause breathing difficulties, paralysis, and potentially be life-threatening, as noted by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The CDC advises that individuals experiencing symptoms should not delay in seeking medical care.
