The president of the College Republicans at New York University announced her resignation this week following pressure from the national organization. This decision came after she was featured in a Vanity Fair article, where she described Barron Trump, the youngest son of former President Trump, as “sort of like an oddity on campus.”
In the profile published on February 12, Kaya Walker, the chapter president, implied that Barron Trump, an 18-year-old freshman at NYU, seemed to be struggling with campus life and appeared somewhat withdrawn. “He goes to class, then he goes home,” she remarked to the publication.
During her interview, Ms. Walker expressed doubts about whether NYU, known for its liberal environment in Greenwich Village and its array of celebrity alumni, was an appropriate setting for Mr. Trump’s son. She also recalled a moment when a professor humorously commented about Barron’s presence, stating, “he doesn’t really belong here.”
Will Donahue, the president of the College Republicans of America, issued a statement on Tuesday indicating that Ms. Walker had not sought approval from the national organization before engaging with Vanity Fair. He emphasized that chapter presidents must receive clearance prior to communicating with media sources that may exhibit biases against conservative perspectives.
“During the conversation, she encountered a narrative about Barron Trump that was clearly skewed,” the statement read. “Instead of redirecting the question to our communications team or countering the claims, she used language that was inconsistent with C.R.A.’s standards of professionalism, which unintentionally contributed to a negative and misleading portrayal.”
The College Republicans recommended Ms. Walker’s resignation on Sunday, and she complied. The organization has also extended an invitation to Barron Trump to join as a member.
