Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella recently revealed exciting plans for the company’s gaming future, stating that a new array of video games will harness the capabilities of their innovative generative AI model, known as ‘Muse.’

The introduction of Muse, announced earlier this week, positions itself as a cutting-edge generative AI that can create “game visuals, controller actions, or both,” according to Microsoft’s description. In conjunction with this announcement, the company demonstrated how Muse can generate game graphics using training data from Ninja Theory’s 2020 title, Bleeding Edge.

In a recent interview, Nadella likened the potential of Muse to the awe he experienced when he first encountered groundbreaking generative AI models like ChatGPT. He noted that Microsoft is already strategizing on how to integrate generative AI into various games.

“This is incredibly exciting… We aim to explore if gameplay data can drive the generation of games that are not only consistent but also diverse, while allowing for user modifications. This is the essence of Muse,” he shared during his appearance on the Dwarkesh Podcast.

Nadella expressed his enthusiasm about the imminent catalog of games that will utilize these models. He recounted first witnessing Muse in action at the hands of Phil Spencer, where an Xbox controller’s inputs resulted in outputs that were coherently connected to the game itself.

“That was a groundbreaking moment for me, reminiscent of the first time we saw ChatGPT complete sentences or DALL-E create images. This is truly a pivotal moment in technology,” he remarked.

Despite generative AI sparking considerable discussion within the gaming industry, some experts voice concerns about the implications for employment and creativity. Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick recently expressed optimism, suggesting that AI could potentially create more job opportunities rather than reduce them. He also mentioned that he hasn’t identified any new regulations needed to protect developers.

In a chat with Video Games Chronicle, Josef Fares, director of Split Fiction and It Takes Two, emphasized the importance of developers collaborating with AI instead of resisting its advances, describing the situation as both “exciting and potentially daunting.”

With these developments, Microsoft stands at the forefront of adopting generative AI in gaming, paving the way for innovative experiences in the future.
