TAMPA — Marcus Stroman asserts that skipping the first two days of workouts was not intended to send a message.

However, upon arriving at camp on Friday, the Yankees’ right-handed pitcher made his intentions clear.

“I am a starter,” Stroman emphasized 11 times during his 10-minute conversation with the media at Steinbrenner Field. “I will not pitch in the bullpen.”

This declaration follows an offseason where the Yankees attempted to trade him, but have yet to find a suitable deal.

As he joins the team, Stroman is expected to be the odd man out in the Yankees’ starting rotation. Nevertheless, an injury could swiftly alter that scenario.

According to the collective bargaining agreement, Stroman was not obligated to report until February 22, a detail he reiterated several times.

“I don’t believe there was a necessity for me to be present the past few days, given the circumstances,” Stroman mentioned. “I had a productive conversation with [Aaron Boone], everything is going smoothly. My rapport with the team remains unchanged. I’m thrilled to be back and I’m fully prepared to go.”

“I know I can compete at any level, with any squad. Whether I’m present or not, my physique is ready. I’m prepared to deliver over 30 starts.”

Boone expressed no worries regarding Stroman’s determination to remain a starter, noting that the team is focused on preparing him for that role, with roster decisions not expected for nearly six weeks—a significant duration in the world of baseball.

“We will address any issues as they arise,” Boone stated. “But for now, our priority is to ensure he is ready to perform.”

As for the timing of his arrival, Stroman remarked:

“I felt today was a fitting day to show up. Valentine’s Day creates a positive atmosphere; everyone is joyful on this occasion.”

Stroman shared that this offseason was particularly challenging for him, revealing that he lost his home in Malibu due to the recent fires.

The 33-year-old also has a residence in the Tampa area, where he spent time before joining his teammates at camp on Friday.
