LOS ANGELES — In early January, Jason Northgrave, a member of the El Segundo, California, Fire Department, joined fellow responders to combat the Palisades fire—one of several wildfires that have devastated Southern California.
Northgrave was among numerous local first responders who teamed up with former NHL players and celebrities for a heartfelt hockey event called Skate for LA Strong. This initiative, organized by the Los Angeles Kings in collaboration with the NHL, was designed to aid wildfire recovery efforts in the community.
“Right from the start, we experienced an outpouring of support and kindness, which we truly appreciated,” the firefighter remarked at Crypto.com Arena on Sunday. “Participating in an event like this is simply incredible. It feels like a blessing, and we’re deeply grateful. Plus, it’s a lot of fun playing. There are so many wonderful aspects to this experience.”
Roger Sackaroff, a former sports reporter in New York, shared how the September 11, 2001, attacks reshaped his outlook, motivating him to make a more significant difference. He has spent the past 17 years with the Los Angeles City Fire Department.
“The gratitude is truly humbling,” Sackaroff stated. “We don’t seek thanks for what we do. Our focus is on serving. Typically, we perform our duties and move on without much notice. So, experiencing this appreciation is incredibly touching, and we are truly thankful for it; it’s very meaningful.”
The event featured four teams competing in two semifinal matches, each consisting of two 10-minute periods with a running clock. Team Blue, led by actor Danny DeVito and sportscaster Al Michaels, progressed to the final game against Team Red, coached by Vince Vaughn and Cobie Smulders.
Team Red emerged victorious with a score of 4-0.
“It’s unfortunate that such tragedies lead to moments like this, but for the Kings to organize an event that unites not just Los Angeles, but all of California and even our nation, speaks volumes about our character in times of crisis,” Vaughn reflected after the game. “Being part of this and witnessing the love and support from everyone is truly special.”
