Italy’s Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni, recently visited the Pope, who is currently hospitalized due to pneumonia affecting both lungs. The 88-year-old pontiff was admitted to Rome’s Gemelli Hospital on Friday after being diagnosed with a respiratory infection.
In her remarks following the visit, Meloni expressed her relief at finding the Pope alert and engaging, stating, “I was very happy to see him responsive. We shared some lighthearted moments as usual. His renowned sense of humor remains intact.” She extended heartfelt wishes for his swift recovery on behalf of the Italian government and the nation as a whole.
Earlier this week, the Vatican announced that medical evaluations, including a chest X-ray, revealed a “complex picture” regarding the Pope’s health condition. Pneumonia, which can lead to lung inflammation and scarring, poses significant health risks, causing symptoms such as chest pain and difficulty breathing.
The latest update from the Vatican indicated that despite his fragile health, the Pope remained alert and even had breakfast. A Vatican spokesman noted that he was still able to get out of bed and sit in an armchair within his hospital room, managing to attend to some work.
However, the Pope has had to cancel a papal audience planned for Saturday and is unable to attend Mass on Sunday due to his health condition. Meanwhile, outside the hospital, supporters and pilgrims continue to gather, lighting candles, praying, and leaving messages of encouragement for the pontiff.
