The initial Geekbench results for Apple’s latest iPhone 16e have emerged, highlighting the performance implications of utilizing a binned version of the A18 chip, which has fewer GPU cores than its counterparts in the standard iPhone 16 lineup.
As per the Geekbench 6 Metal benchmark results reported by MySmartPrice, the iPhone 16e achieved a score of 24,188 points in graphics processing tests, which is approximately 15% lower than that of the pricier iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus. This performance gap likely results from Apple’s choice to deploy a binned A18 chip. Chip binning is a strategy commonly employed in the industry, where chips with defective or inactive components are utilized in lower-tier devices. This practice enables manufacturers to optimize production efficiency and minimize waste while offering various product tiers.
In this case, the A18 chip incorporated in the iPhone 16e comes with a 4-core GPU setup, as opposed to the 5-core GPU seen in the standard iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus models. Nevertheless, the Geekbench evaluation indicates that the CPU count remains stable at 6 cores.
Although the GPU performance is lower, the iPhone 16e is expected to deliver robust performance overall, notably at its starting price of $599. The Geekbench analysis also confirms our earlier report that the iPhone 16e is equipped with 8GB of RAM, meeting Apple’s minimum requirements for enhanced capabilities. The tested device was operating on iOS 18.3.1.
The full impact of the reduced GPU core count on daily usage and gaming performance will require additional benchmark evaluations and practical tests. Pre-orders for the iPhone 16e open today at 5 a.m. Pacific Time, with an official launch scheduled for Friday, February 28, across 59 countries and regions.
