NEW DELHI (AP) — On Friday, a court in India convicted a 31-year-old man for the rape and murder of an Irish tourist in a well-known resort area in 2017.
Vikat Bhagat was found guilty by Judge Kshama Joshi at the District and Sessions Court located in the western state of Goa. Judge Joshi announced that the sentencing will take place on Monday.
The body of 28-year-old Danielle McLaughlin was discovered on a beach popular among tourists in Goa in March 2017, following a farmer’s report. An autopsy revealed that her death resulted from brain damage and neck constriction.

In accordance with Indian law, the names of rape victims are typically kept confidential. However, McLaughlin’s family chose to engage with the media to raise awareness about her case. This tragic incident underscores the ongoing violence against women in India, despite the implementation of stricter sexual assault laws following the brutal gang-rape of a young woman in New Delhi in 2012.
In a statement, McLaughlin’s family expressed their gratitude to the public prosecutor and the investigating officers for their relentless pursuit of justice.
“They have cared for her like their own daughter and fought tirelessly on her behalf,” the family shared, as reported by the Press Trust of India.
On the “Truth For Danielle McLaughlin” Facebook page, a family statement reflected that her story has finally been acknowledged.
“We have spent nearly eight years advocating for Danielle, and we are relieved to finally begin the grieving process for our profound loss. She meant more than just a daughter, sister, and best friend. She brought joy to every space she entered and touched the lives of everyone she met. Her light was extinguished far too soon due to his cruelty,” the statement conveyed.
Ireland’s foreign ministry, through Deputy Prime Minister Simon Harris, praised McLaughlin’s family for their strength and perseverance in coping with such tremendous loss.
“Although nothing can alleviate their grief, I hope this verdict brings a sense of closure for the family. My thoughts are with them as they navigate the pain of losing their cherished daughter and sister. May Danielle find eternal peace,” the statement added.
Goa is a favored destination for backpackers in India, attracting millions of visitors to its many picturesque beach resorts annually.
