The tri-fold smartphone market is gaining momentum as Huawei proudly introduces the Mate XT, now available worldwide. This innovative device marks a significant leap in foldable technology, being the first commercially available tri-fold smartphone.
Until now, users have been adapting to the foldable phone format, which typically offers just two screen configurations. The Mate XT breaks new ground by providing a third option, allowing users to utilize the device in both its folded and unfolded states, as well as a generous tablet-like configuration.
Initially launched in China, the Mate XT has now made its debut on the global stage, although it is not yet available in the United States. While competitors like Samsung have been experimenting with tri-fold designs, Huawei is stepping forward with a fully realized product ready for consumers.
The Mate XT features two hinges, including one side with a cleverly designed foldable glass edge. When closed, the device measures 6.4 inches, unfolds to reveal a 7.9-inch screen, and opens fully to a substantial 10.2 inches—comparable to modern tablets.
Huawei is keen to highlight that the Mate XT is the largest tri-fold device currently on the market, a claim that holds true simply because it’s the only one available at present. Future entries into the market may vary in size and design, reminiscent of the diversity seen in initial foldable models like the Pixel Fold and Oppo Find N2. Additionally, Huawei boasts that the global version of the Mate XT is the thinnest foldable device when fully extended, measuring just 3.6mm, surpassing the Oppo Find N5’s thickness of 4.47mm, although it measures 10.8mm thick when folded.
With its striking design and advanced features, the Mate XT is set to draw attention wherever it goes, now accessible to consumers around the world outside of China.
