Exciting news has emerged about the upcoming Okami sequel, which will extend Amaterasu’s journey using Capcom’s advanced RE Engine. This development was recently confirmed by the game’s creators.

In a recent interview with IGN, director Hideki Kamiya, producer Yoshiaki Hirabayashi, and Kiyohiko Sakata, head of Machine Head Works, shared insights about the much-anticipated sequel that was first teased at last year’s The Game Awards.

Hirabayashi noted that Capcom has “always dreamed of producing an Okami sequel” since the original IP holds a special place in their hearts. The recent changes, including Kamiya’s departure from PlatinumGames in 2023, have created the right moment to explore this project further.

Kamiya has always envisioned a sequel, reflecting on the original’s creation nearly two decades ago. He stated, “It’s important to remember that the story isn’t fully resolved, and I’ve always wanted to bring it to completion.” He expressed that his previous role at Platinum limited these aspirations, but now, with Takeuchi by his side, he can finally realize this vision.

Despite its initial commercial shortcomings, as Kamiya described in a video with Ikumi Nakamura, the original Okami turned out to be a source of pride for the creators. However, the question arises: why embark on a sequel now?

Hirabayashi pointed out that “millions of dedicated fans exist,” with continual sales from recent re-releases demonstrating the franchise’s enduring popularity.

Kamiya elaborated, “Initially, we thought the reach might be limited from a development standpoint. However, with the various re-releases, we’ve seen a growing appreciation for Okami. The overwhelming responses from fans at the TGA announcement and on social media further confirmed the anticipation for this sequel.” He added, “Watching the YouTube reactions brought tears of joy as I realized how happy fans are about this new development.”

He continued, “The encouragement from fans has played a crucial role in making this project a reality. Without their support, we might never have pursued this path.” He expressed immense gratitude for the community’s enthusiasm.

What can gamers anticipate from this sequel? Hirabayashi confirmed that Amaterasu will feature prominently in the teaser, continuing the storyline from the original title.

Kamiya mentioned, “I have a comprehensive vision for the theme and story, which I have been developing in my mind for several years. I’m eager to translate that vision into something tangible for our fans.” He has a detailed concept for the game’s direction.

Furthermore, it’s been confirmed that the sequel will utilize the RE Engine, the same technology behind Capcom’s successful Resident Evil series, Devil May Cry 5, Street Fighter 6, and various Monster Hunter titles.

Hirabayashi believes “the RE Engine is crucial for bringing Kamiya-san’s artistic aspirations to life,” while Kamiya highlighted that the engine is renowned for its expressive capabilities, making it an ideal choice for the project.

Sakata shared how the hand-drawn aesthetics of the original were challenging to replicate on the PS2. “Today’s technology allows us to achieve our original vision, and even exceed it, thanks to the capabilities of the RE Engine,” he remarked.

As it stands, the Okami sequel is still in the early stages of development, with no specific release information available yet.

“We won’t compromise quality for speed, but we assure fans that we won’t delay progress unnecessarily,” Hirabayashi confirmed. “We are fully committed to delivering a remarkable title.”
