The body of water previously identified in the United States as the Gulf of Mexico is now referred to as the Gulf of America on Google Maps for users located in the US.
This transformation follows an executive order issued by President Donald Trump, which officially renamed the geographic area. Google has indicated that it usually implements name changes that reflect updates from authorized government sources.
According to Google, “Users accessing Maps in the US will notice ‘Gulf of America,’ while those in Mexico will still see ‘Gulf of Mexico.’ Individuals in other locations will be able to view both names,” as mentioned in a statement released on Monday.
Recently, Google also announced plans to revert Mount McKinley’s name back to Denali, following Trump’s directive. Former President Barack Obama had renamed the Alaskan peak to Denali in 2015 to honor the indigenous people of the region, but, as of Tuesday, this name change has yet to be reflected on Google Maps.
Both renaming actions originate from an executive decision made by Trump shortly after he took office, intended to “celebrate American excellence.”
The order was critical of Obama’s choice to rename McKinley, describing it as “a slight to the life, achievements, and sacrifice of President McKinley.” It also draws parallels to Trump, noting that McKinley “promoted tariffs” and was assassinated “in an act against our nation’s values and success.”
In addition, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) issued an announcement on Monday concerning the geographical name alterations.
The FAA stated, “Please note that we are in the process of updating our data and charts to reflect the name change from the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America, as well as from Denali to Mount McKinley.”
The U.S. Coast Guard, which oversees the nation’s coastal waters, is also in the process of incorporating the new designation of Gulf of America into its public notices.
