Twelve individuals sustained injuries when a grenade was thrown into a crowded bar in Grenoble, France, according to local officials. The incident occurred at the Aksehir bar shortly after 8 PM local time (7 PM GMT) on Wednesday, resulting in two individuals being in critical condition.
Authorities have not yet determined the motive behind the attack; however, investigators believe it could be related to a personal conflict. Prosecutor Francois Touret-de-Courcey revealed that eyewitnesses reported the unidentified assailant may have also been armed with a Kalashnikov assault rifle.
While speaking with journalists at the site, he stated, “There’s no evidence to suggest a connection to terrorism,” referring to the event as an “act of extreme violence.” He also mentioned that investigators are exploring potential links to drug-related activities.
As many patrons were enjoying the evening at the bar, located in the city’s Olympic Village area, the suspect entered briefly before throwing the grenade. Approximately 80 firefighters and law enforcement officers were dispatched to the scene, with the area remaining sealed off during the Thursday morning hours, as reported by French publication Le Figaro.
Deputy Mayor Chloe Pantel informed the AFP news agency that the Aksehir bar is a popular gathering place for locals and visitors, especially for watching football matches. She noted that police presence in the neighborhood will be heightened for the foreseeable future.
In a post on X, Mayor Eric Piolle condemned the incident as a “criminal act of extraordinary violence” and expressed gratitude to emergency responders for their swift actions.
