Google has announced to iOS users that support for Gemini will be removed from the primary Google app, as the company encourages users to switch to the dedicated Gemini application.
Initially, iOS users could access Gemini through the main Google app, which featured a toggle between Google Search and Gemini for several months. Yet, as Google continues to enhance the Gemini platform, several new functionalities have not been integrated into the Google app—most notably, the Gemini Live feature. This shift has occurred because Google is concentrating on the comprehensive Gemini app for iOS, which was officially launched in November.
iPhone and iPad users are now informed that Gemini is “no longer accessible” within the Google app.
In an email notification to users, Google stated: “Gemini is no longer available in the Google app,” stressing that “Gemini is now available as a standalone app, and this is the optimal way to access it.” The email includes the following message:
We’re implementing changes to enhance the Gemini experience on iOS. Gemini is now offered as a standalone app, which is now the best place to utilize Gemini. To keep enjoying Gemini, download the new Gemini app from the App Store.
With the Gemini app, you will gain access to all existing features and additional functionalities.
Earlier this month, Google removed the switcher interface, as previously reported, but users can still access it via the “More” tab in the Google app (version 356.0) on iOS. However, we have seen that a pop-up directive prompts users to download the full Gemini app for iOS from the App Store.
