As Friedrich Merz made his entrance at the CDU headquarters in Berlin, the crowd erupted in applause.
Accompanied by CSU chair Markus Söder, he expressed gratitude to voters for their confidence and declared: “We have triumphed in the Bundestag election.”
Describing the night as “historic” for his conservative party, Merz noted the successful collaboration between the CDU and its Bavarian counterpart, the CSU, leading up to the election.
Merz acknowledged the significant responsibility ahead of him, saying he is “conscious of what lies before us.”
He reminded the audience that it’s essential to “quickly restore our capacity for action to effectively address domestic issues, reestablish Germany’s presence in Europe, and demonstrate to the world that Germany is governed competently once again.”
However, he emphasized that the work begins tomorrow, stating that for now, it is time to celebrate.
