In recent years, NFL teams have explored various alternatives to onside kicks, and this topic may resurface during the upcoming offseason discussions.
Last year, the Philadelphia Eagles introduced a potential rule change that would enable teams to attempt a fourth-and-20 play from their own 20-yard line instead of executing an onside kick to regain possession. While the proposal did not garner the necessary 24 votes for approval, Rich McKay, the chairman of the NFL Competition Committee, expressed on Sunday that he believes the idea may be revisited this offseason.
“I still believe it could pop up,” McKay stated, as reported by Mark Maske from the Washington Post. “It’s early… I can see certain teams bringing it up again this offseason.”
McKay also mentioned that the committee plans to consider additional adjustments to the onside kick regulations, aiming to enhance the likelihood of the kicking team recovering the ball. Given the previous lack of support for alternatives to the onside kick, this approach might be more feasible for the league if any modifications occur before the 2025 season.
