Elon Musk has reaffirmed his connection with Germany’s far-right party, the Alternative für Deutschland (AfD). Following the election results in Germany last night, he shared a congratulatory message on X directed at AfD co-chair Alice Weidel.

In his post, Musk referenced a message from Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, who had also expressed support for the AfD.

“The people of Germany voted for change in immense numbers. I want to congratulate @Alice_Weidel on doubling @AfD’s share of the votes. Good luck and God bless Germany!” remarked Orbán.

Musk replied: “Indeed, congratulations @Alice_Weidel! At this rate of growth, @AfD will be the majority party by the next election.”

In the recent election, Germany’s traditional conservative parties, the Christian Democrats (CDU) and their sister party, the Christian Social Union (CSU), secured around 30% of the vote. The AfD achieved a remarkable second place with 20%.

The center-left Social Democrats (SDP) garnered 16%, marking one of their worst performances to date. Meanwhile, the Greens received 13.3%, followed by the Left party at 8.6%. The liberal Free Democratic Party (FDP) managed 4.9%, and the left-wing populist BSW party obtained 4.7%, with other parties trailing at 3.9%.

Friedrich Merz, the leader of CDU/CSU, is set to become Germany’s next chancellor.

Since engaging in political discourse, Musk has consistently shown his support for the AfD. In December, he declared, “Only the AfD can save Germany.”

The results from last night mark the AfD’s most significant achievement yet, though this outcome has been anticipated within Germany. The party has been steadily increasing its electoral support over the past few years, raising concerns both domestically and globally.

The AfD primarily unites its members through strong anti-immigration and anti-Islam sentiments. The German judiciary has labeled the party as a “suspected extremist organization.” Additionally, it has historical ties to the neo-Nazi movement, with several of its members facing legal actions and penalties for endorsing national socialist rhetoric.
