The upcoming Elden Ring Nightreign marks a bold departure for its developer, FromSoftware. This title is not only their first spin-off but also diverges from their tradition of solitary quests in desolate realms. Instead, it offers a co-op gameplay experience infused with elements reminiscent of battle royale games—an innovative twist best appreciated through firsthand play. Additionally, the game promises downloadable content (DLC), with details emerging from its Steam listing revealing how it will differ from typical FromSoft expansions.
While details are sparse, the deluxe edition description on the Steam page hints at exciting additions: “Additional DLC – more playable characters and bosses.” Upon launch, Elden Ring Nightreign will feature eight distinct characters, each akin to various classes. Players can choose from a swift assassin, a robust knight, a skilled archer, or a witch clad in a sizable hat. The forthcoming DLC is expected to expand this exciting roster, introducing new heroes, each equipped with unique play styles and ultimate powers.
The inclusion of DLC bosses introduces intriguing possibilities. In a departure from the original title, Elden Ring Nightreign will incorporate creatures from the Dark Souls universe, including the iconic giant spider from Dark Souls 2 and the centipede demon originating from the first installment. The potential for more bosses hinted at on the Steam page suggests a vast array of threats drawn from the last decade of FromSoftware’s rich catalog.
I personally think it would be amusing to see Sister Friede from Dark Souls 3 join the fray. Known for her formidable challenge, she wields a massive scythe and is accompanied by a fierce ally during battle. If FromSoftware understands its audience, introducing Gwyn, the Lord of Cinder, would surely thrill long-time Souls fans, especially with the iconic tune of his theme echoing through the arena.
The pricing for the DLC remains yet to be announced, though it comes as part of the deluxe edition, which is priced approximately $15 higher than the standard version. We might anticipate a $15 package that includes additional characters and bosses upon the DLC’s release later this year. One question remains: how will the DLC function in a multiplayer environment where not every player may have it? This detail is something we hope the FromSoftware team clarifies prior to the game’s launch on May 30.
