PHILADELPHIA — The Eagles have chosen to promote from within for their offensive coordinator position, elevating Kevin Patullo, the passing game coordinator and associate head coach, to the role as of Wednesday.

Patullo steps in for Kellen Moore, who recently became the head coach of the New Orleans Saints shortly after Philadelphia’s Super Bowl LIX victory against the Kansas City Chiefs.

At 43 years old, Patullo brings a wealth of experience, having previously collaborated with head coach Nick Sirianni. From 2018 to 2020, Patullo served as wide receivers coach and passing game specialist for the Indianapolis Colts while Sirianni was their offensive coordinator. When Sirianni took the helm in Philadelphia, he appointed Patullo as the passing game coordinator.

“Kevin has played a crucial role in our success,” Sirianni remarked earlier this month. “He juggles multiple responsibilities and advises me on various head coaching matters. I always consult him before making decisions. He has also been a sounding board for Kellen concerning our offense.”

“Our working relationship spans eight years, making that continuity vital. He understands my thought process in different scenarios and how I prefer to teach,” he continued.

With the change to Patullo, quarterback Jalen Hurts will now be on his fifth offensive playcaller since he joined the league in 2020. While the lack of consistency hasn’t been ideal for Hurts, he does have a rapport with Patullo, who has influenced the offense and the passing game over recent seasons.

“I have great confidence in Kevin based on his track record,” Hurts stated about Patullo last week. “However, I’ve come to realize that the choice of offensive coordinator is beyond my control. I intend to adapt and improve as best as I can.”

The last promotion for the offensive coordinator position from within did not yield the desired results. Following Shane Steichen’s exit, the Eagles advanced Brian Johnson, a longtime acquaintance of Hurts’ family, to the role. However, the offensive visions among Sirianni, Johnson, and Hurts failed to align, leading to a lack of offensive identity and contributing to the team’s struggles late in the 2023 season.

In the offseason, Moore was hired to replace Johnson. Sirianni shifted much of the offensive responsibility to Moore while adopting a more overarching CEO approach. Following a bye after Week 5, the Eagles relied heavily on Saquon Barkley and their strong running game, which fueled a 10-game winning streak and propelled them into the Super Bowl.
