Following the landmark 50th anniversary of Dungeons & Dragons celebrated last year, Wizards of the Coast has been busy preparing updates to its foundational rulebooks: the Players’ Handbook, Dungeon Masters’ Guide, and Monster Manual. As Jeremy Crawford, the principal Rules Designer for D&D, stated in 2024, the intention behind these new editions is to create “the finest versions of these books we can offer.” However, there is a notable omission that may leave some fans feeling let down.
According to Polygon, the age of the whimsical fantasy legal disclaimer has officially concluded. They cite examples such as: “Disclaimer: Wizards of the Coast is not responsible for the consequences of splitting up the party, inserting appendages into the mouth of a grinning green devil face, accepting dinner invitations from bugbears, storming the halls of a hill giant’s feast, provoking any type of dragon, or responding affirmatively when the DM asks, ‘Are you really sure?’”
P polygon also compiles a nostalgic list of past disclaimers, which is sure to resonate with long-time fans. They highlight that the final inclusion of the Fifth Edition fantasy disclaimer appeared in the July 2024 release, Quests From the Infinite Staircase. Crawford confirmed to the outlet that “the era of fantasy legal disclaimers has come to a close.” However, he mentioned that readers can still enjoy “slightly more direct Easter eggs” throughout the latest D&D editions, including references to characters from the beloved Saturday morning cartoon series from the 1980s. Unfortunately, the charming snippets of fantasy legalese have become a thing of the past, much like THAC0 [the outdated mechanic for rolling To Hit Armor Class 0].
