Draymond Green expressed his strong opinions regarding the NBA All-Star Game’s revamped format.

The Golden State Warriors star criticized the new structure during TNT’s broadcast, deeming it “unfair” to players who have dedicated themselves to earning All-Star recognition.

This year, the All-Star Game has transformed into a mini-tournament featuring four teams, each consisting of eight players. The teams compete in semifinal matches, with the winners moving on to the championship round.

To secure a spot in the finals, the first team to score 40 points prevails—a rule that didn’t sit well with Green.

“You spend an entire year striving to become an All-Star, and then you only get to play up to 40 points? That’s just unfair, especially for someone like Victor Wembanyama, who takes this game very seriously,” Green stated during the broadcast. “And what about Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, who also approached this game with the utmost seriousness? Legendary scorers like Melo and Kobe never had the chance to pursue scoring records under these conditions.”

“And for what? To showcase some emerging talent? We’re gearing up to watch the Olympic team compete against a U-19 team. Seriously, what’s happening? This is absurd.”

He further added, “This is disappointing; it doesn’t represent basketball.”

Green shared his concerns earlier in the evening on the pregame show, focusing on the integration of a squad from the Rising Stars Challenge.

While three of the All-Star teams feature top NBA players, the fourth team consists of first- and second-year players who excelled in the Rising Stars Challenge during the All-Star Weekend.

Referring to this team, which is named Team Candice, Green described it as a “team that no one wants to see” before critiquing their participation.

“Those players didn’t make the All-Star team,” Green remarked. “To feature in the All-Star Game without being selected is simply ridiculous.”

The NBA has implemented this format change in an effort to revive interest and excitement around the All-Star Game, which has seen a decline in intensity and viewer engagement in recent years.
