As we reach the midpoint of the first trimester of 2025, gaming companies everywhere are gearing up to unveil their most anticipated titles arriving soon, as well as those expected in 2026. On February 12, Sony’s first State of Play broadcast showcased several exciting new games from developers around the globe, with a notable focus on space-themed adventures.
Currently, science fiction games set in outer space are thriving, with so many promising titles that it’s challenging to keep track of them all. In December, we reported on the most significant sci-fi titles unveiled or expanded at the 2024 Game Awards. Now, a slew of additional exciting releases has emerged.
Before diving into the three standout sci-fi games of the night, we want to highlight Split Fiction and Metal Eden. Split Fiction is a new co-op adventure bursting with creativity from Hazelight Studios, known for their work on It Takes Two, while Metal Eden is an intense first-person shooter set in a dystopian urban landscape. Although they might not be set in space, both games are impressive and fulfill that sci-fi craving—making us eager to play!
Borderlands 4 (Gearbox)

One of the most exciting upcoming titles featuring space elements is Borderlands 4. This game prioritizes action-packed gameplay over slow-paced exploration, making it an excellent addition for players who thrive on adrenaline.
After the mixed reception of Borderlands 3 and the poorly received live-action film adaptation released last year, Gearbox has quite a bit to prove with this installment. However, optimism is high, especially after seeing the new trailer that successfully highlights the latest vault hunters, their abilities, and the improved, more dynamic gunplay.
Details about the plot and new gameplay mechanics are still forthcoming, but we feel hopeful about Borderlands 4 based on the recent preview. The game is officially set to launch on September 23, 2025 for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.
Directive 8020 (Supermassive Games)

The highly anticipated next chapter in Supermassive Games’ Dark Pictures horror anthology, Directive 8020, has finally revealed its plot and characters through an intriguing and eerie trailer. The game clearly draws inspiration from beloved space horror films, such as The Thing and Event Horizon. We appreciate its thrilling vibe, regardless of any perceived clichés.
Directive 8020 is officially set to release on September 30, 2025, one week following Borderlands 4, just in time to add a chilling touch to the Halloween season. Players can look forward to experiencing this game on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC, with last-generation consoles no longer being supported.
Saros (Housemarque)

We’re excited to discuss Housemarque’s latest venture, Saros, despite the lack of gameplay footage revealed during February’s State of Play. After the critical success of Returnal, which masterfully blended a compelling story with intense action and roguelike elements, it seems Saros aims to take these concepts even further.
This was the only new first-party title unveiled during the broadcast, and PlayStation Studios announced that it will be released in 2026, showcasing exclusive graphical innovations specifically for the PS5 Pro. The narrative follows Arjun Devraj, a powerful Soltari Enforcer on the planet Carcosa, who is searching for answers amid a looming eclipse. This intriguing premise positions Saros as a promising companion to Naughty Dog’s Intergalactic.
* His captivating voice is recognizable from roles in titles like Gears 5 where he voiced Fahz, and more recently, as a Space Marine in Warhammer 40K Boltgun.
