Obsidian Entertainment’s vibrant and engaging title, Avowed, seems far from being a mere standalone release. This game follows in the footsteps of the acclaimed developer known for hits like The Outer Worlds and Fallout: New Vegas.
Since its launch last week, Avowed has garnered positive feedback from players and critics alike. In a recent Bloomberg interview, Carrie Patel, the game director, hinted at the potential for future installments within the franchise.
When questioned about her upcoming projects, Patel expressed that creating additional content for Avowed—whether as expansions or sequels—is a more probable direction than starting something entirely new.
“Having created this amazing world and developed a strong team dynamic around the content and gameplay, I would love to explore more opportunities in this universe,” Patel stated.
Obsidian has dedicated over six years to the development of Avowed, which builds upon the rich lore of its Pillars of Eternity franchise. The development of Avowed began in 2018, two years before the studio’s acquisition by Microsoft.
Originally envisioned as a multiplayer adventure akin to Skyrim with an expansive open world, the project pivoted away from its online aspects early in production. After Patel joined the team in 2021, the game’s structure transitioned from a single vast world to several large open environments. Additionally, the team chose to delve deeper into the lore of Pillars of Eternity than initially planned.
“In any game, you must prioritize where to invest your efforts,” Patel remarked. “From our experience with The Outer Worlds, we recognized that crafting a compelling game with open zones could offer distinct advantages, allowing for a more intentional thematic experience and a clearer sense of player progression across different areas.”
Representing its unique qualities, our reviewer Bertie noted in Eurogamer’s review that “while Avowed may not boast the highest production values, it compensates with charm, depth, and an endearing spirit. It stands out as one of this year’s delightful surprises.”
Earlier this month, Obsidian expressed its commitment to remaining active and relevant as it aims to celebrate its centenary in 78 years by continuing to operate in a “lean and invested” manner.
