A devastating multi-vehicle accident occurred within a tunnel on Interstate 80 in Wyoming, resulting in at least two fatalities and five injuries late Friday morning.

Thick smoke and flames erupted from the tunnel as individuals fled to safety.

Multiple reports indicate that the crash compromised the structural integrity of the tunnel.

According to social media updates from the Wyoming Department of Transportation, geologists and bridge engineers are on their way to evaluate the condition of the tunnel.

The incident took place around 11:37 a.m. in the westbound Green River Tunnel, leading to a fire outbreak within the tunnel, as stated by the Wyoming Highway Patrol.

The presence of smoke and the detonation of a tire within the tunnel created challenges for emergency personnel attempting to reach the site post-incident, stated Wyoming Highway Patrol Tpr. Nicholas Warren.

“My heart goes out to the families and friends of those affected by this tragic accident,” stated WYDOT Director Darin Westby. “My thoughts and prayers are with everyone involved. WYDOT and WHP are on-site to assist local emergency services and provide extra support and manage traffic.”

Fox News Digital has reached out to the Sweetwater County Sheriff’s Office for further details.

“We want to express our deepest gratitude to the first responders in Sweetwater County for their support and assistance during this unfortunate event,” added Wyoming Highway Patrol Lt. Col. Karl Germain in a statement.

Motorists are urged to comply with posted speed limits during the detour, as delays are expected.

The highway remained shut down in both directions by Friday evening, with eastbound lanes being utilized for emergency response staging.
