ARLINGTON, TEXAS – In an exciting season opener, No. 8 Clemson made a remarkable comeback from a 4-1 deficit to secure a 6-5 victory over No. 13 Oklahoma State during the Shriners Children’s College Showdown at Globe Life Field on Friday. This match marked Clemson’s inaugural game played in a Major League Baseball stadium and their first experience in a dome.
The Tigers took the lead early with a groundout by Jarren Purify in the second inning. However, Avery Ortiz equalized for Oklahoma State by launching a two-out solo home run in the third. The Cowboys extended their advantage with two additional runs in the same inning, but Donovan LaSalle responded with a solo home run in the fourth. Later in the fifth inning, Dominic Listi and Josh Paino capitalized on bases-loaded walks, narrowing the gap to 4-3.
In the sixth inning, Oklahoma State managed to score again with back-to-back two-out doubles. Yet, the Tigers fought back, as Luke Gaffney delivered a clutch two-out, run-scoring double in the bottom half to trim the Cowboys’ lead to 5-4. The seventh inning saw Tristan Bissetta’s groundout bring home the tying run, followed by Josh Paino sliding home on a wild pitch to put Clemson ahead.
Nathan Dvorsky emerged as the winning pitcher after a flawless seventh inning, while Lucas Mahlstedt earned a save with two innings of strong relief. Noah Wech was charged with the loss for Oklahoma State.
