Canadian artist Chantal Kreviazuk made headlines by altering the lyrics of the national anthem during the 4 Nations Face-Off championship matchup between the United States and Canada on Thursday, intensifying an already charged affair marked by political undercurrents.
During her pre-game rendition of “O Canada,” Kreviazuk modified the line “in all of us command” to “that only us command,” later sharing an image of the rewritten lyric on her hand via Instagram.
According to publicist Adam Gonshor, Kreviazuk’s modification was a statement against President Donald Trump, who has made remarks about possibly making Canada the 51st state of the US.
Hailing from Winnipeg, Kreviazuk expressed her concern over the ongoing tensions between the nations on Instagram, stating: “I’m sorry if you believe we’d be better off annexed. Art is our truth, and I firmly believe in standing up, using our voices, and protecting ourselves in these critical times…”
She further added, “No, we must voice our anger against any misuse of authority. I grew up influenced by music that stemmed from courageous voices dedicated to peaceful resolutions.”
“Canada, much like Ukraine, is a sovereign nation, period. We possess a culture distinct from others, united by our shared values. We show care, kindness, and strength.”
Throughout his presidency, Trump has repeatedly expressed his aspirations for Canada to become the 51st state, often targeting Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and hinting at severe tariffs that could drastically harm Canada’s economy.
This climate has led to instances of “The Star-Spangled Banner” being booed throughout arenas in Canada recently, including in Montreal before the initial clash of the 4 Nations Face-Off.
“O Canada” faced a brief booing before Thursday’s matchup in Boston, but by the end, it seemed much of the audience was singing along.
Ultimately, Canada triumphed 3-2 in overtime, securing victory in the first-ever 4 Nations Face-Off championship — a midseason international tournament organized by the NHL.
Following the game, Kreviazuk shared a photo on Instagram showing a fist pump with the caption, “And justice prevails.”
Trudeau highlighted the ongoing tensions between the United States and Canada after the match, tweeting, “You can’t take our country — and you can’t take our game.”
