A Canadian tourist experienced a shocking and dangerous encounter with a shark near the Turks and Caicos Islands in the Caribbean, which concluded only after her spouse intervened with the six-foot-long predator.
The 55-year-old woman, whose identity has not been disclosed, suffered the severe loss of both hands while attempting to take a photo of the shark close to the shore during her vacation. Reports from officials cited by the Sun indicate that she also incurred significant injuries to her thigh while swimming near the beach.
Witnesses revealed that one of the woman’s hands was severed at the wrist, while the other was lost midway up her forearm. Although not officially verified, initial speculation points to a bull shark as the likely attacker.
Eyewitnesses described a harrowing scene as the victim’s family looked on helplessly from the beach while her husband attempted to fend off the shark. One onlooker recounted, “I was there for 40 minutes and it was still lingering. That shark bite victim lost both her hands and parts of her forearms. Her husband tried to fight it off.” Despite her serious injuries, including a significant wound to her upper left thigh, witnesses noted that she was able to swim back to the shore.
Local authorities confirmed that the six-foot shark remained in the shallow waters following the incident. Environmental officials arrived to assist the victim, finding family members applying pressure to stem the heavy bleeding.
The Royal Turks and Caicos Islands Police Force released a statement noting, “At 10:33 am today (February 7), our control room received a report regarding a female visitor injured while swimming. Medical responders and police were dispatched to the scene at Blue Hills in Providenciales. The 55-year-old woman was rescued from the water and quickly taken to Cheshire Hall Medical Centre for treatment.”
Subsequently, the victim was moved to another facility for specialized care. While she faces permanent injuries, medical professionals are optimistic about her recovery.
In response to the incident, the Department of Environment and Coastal Resources has closed the beach from Thompson’s Cove to Froggies ATV in Blue Hills until 1 pm on Sunday afternoon. Officials urge the public to remain cautious and respectful towards marine life. They recommend swimming only in designated areas, avoiding murky water, never swimming alone, and refraining from feeding aquatic animals.
