According to a recent report from The Wall Street Journal, Broadcom and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) are both considering potential acquisitions of specific segments of Intel.

Broadcom is looking into acquiring Intel’s chip design and marketing division, while seeking a partner for the manufacturing aspect. On the other hand, TSMC is interested in gaining control over some or all of Intel’s semiconductor factories, likely as a member of an investment consortium.

These negotiations are still in the early stages, as noted by the Journal, with no formal proposals submitted to Intel. Reports indicate that TSMC’s interest may have been spurred by encouragement from the Trump administration. However, a White House spokesperson mentioned that the administration would likely oppose any arrangement that places a foreign company in charge of Intel’s manufacturing facilities.

As Intel continues to face challenges in its business operations, it has become a target for rival chip manufacturers. In September, The Journal reported that Qualcomm expressed interest in acquiring Intel, further highlighting the competitive landscape for this storied chip maker.
