A voluntary recall has been announced for certain canned tuna items available nationwide at retailers like Trader Joe’s, Walmart, and Costco. This recall is due to a defect in the pull-tab design, which poses a risk of potentially life-threatening botulism food poisoning.

Tri-Union Seafoods has recalled select batches of tuna sold under various brand names, including Genova, Van Camp’s, Trader Joe’s, and H-E-B, as reported in a press release issued on Friday by the company and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

The recall was initiated “out of an abundance of caution” following a notification from the supplier regarding a manufacturing flaw in the “easy open” pull lid of these tuna cans, which may compromise the product seal’s integrity.

The defective lid might allow the can’s contents to leak or become contaminated with clostridium botulinum, which can lead to a severe and potentially fatal illness known as botulism.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, clostridium botulinum bacteria can cause botulism, a rare but serious condition that affects the nervous system, leading to symptoms such as difficulty breathing, muscle paralysis, and, in severe cases, death.

Consumers are advised not to consume the affected products, even if they look or smell normal.

These items were sold under the H-E-B brand in Texas and the Trader Joe’s brand in various states including Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Washington D.C., and Wisconsin.

Additionally, Genova brand 7 oz. cans were distributed at Costco locations in Florida and Georgia, while Genova 5 oz. cans were also available at Harris Teeter, Publix, H-E-B, Kroger, Safeway, Walmart, and several independent retailers across states including Alabama, Arkansas, Arizona, California, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, New Jersey, Tennessee, and Texas.

The Van Camp’s brand was distributed through Walmart and independent sellers in Pennsylvania, Florida, and New Jersey.

The company has released an updated list of the specific can codes and “Best If Used By” dates that are affected by this recall.

As of now, there have been no reported illnesses linked to the recalled products. However, anyone who feels unwell after consumption is encouraged to seek medical assistance promptly.

Customers in possession of the recalled tuna cans may return them to the place of purchase for a full refund, dispose of them, or contact Tri-Union Seafoods directly for a retrieval kit and a coupon for a replacement product.

Tri-Union Seafoods has stated that this recall does not affect any other products under their brand and reassured customers of their commitment to maintaining the highest safety and quality standards.
