Susan Kare Introduces 32 New Retro-Inspired Icons Beyond the Screen
Renowned Apple artist Susan Kare has unveiled an exciting collection of 32 new retro-themed icons that are meant to transcend the boundaries of your computer. The "Esc Keys" collection, developed in collaboration with Asprey Studio, features mechanical keyboard keycaps and stylish wearable pendants, each adorned with charming 8-bit pixel art designs including a dog, a plant, mail, and coffee.
While these icons feature fresh designs, they retain the classic style that fans of Kare will instantly recognize. She is famously known for her contribution to the early Macintosh operating system, having created iconic symbols like the "Happy Mac" boot-up image and the classic floppy disk file save icon.
In an interview with Fast Company, Kare and Asprey Studio founder Alastair Walker shared that these new designs are rich with hidden meanings, symbolizing enjoyable activities that extend beyond the confines of a keyboard. Each item in the Esc Keys collection is meticulously crafted from silver or gold-plated silver and is offered as a limited edition, with quantities ranging from 30 to 120 pieces per design, indicating that these items are a worthwhile investment.
Pricing for the collection begins at $650 for silver computer keys, while the exquisite necklace pendants in gold vermeil (a process that involves layering gold over solid silver) can reach up to $2,064. Solid gold options are also available upon request, and each piece includes its own digital artwork securely recorded on the blockchain, ensuring authenticity and traceability of ownership.
