Recently, PlayStation hosted its State of Play event, offering an exciting preview of future games from both first-party and third-party developers. This latest showcase highlighted a significant number of multi-platform titles, set to release on Windows PC and Xbox Series X|S alongside PlayStation. This evolution in the industry reflects changing dynamics in the gaming ecosystem.
Currently, players in the console market are facing rising costs that exceed growth. While Sony has experienced a slight increase in active users year after year, the broader trend indicates that Windows PC is now the leading growth area for the gaming sector. In response, PlayStation is expanding its support for PC, with first-party releases like Helldivers 2 performing notably better on Windows than on PlayStation. Iconic franchises such as God of War and Spider-Man are also making their way to PC, suggesting that a “day and date” release model for future PlayStation games could be on the horizon, similar to Xbox’s approach.
The pace of change is even more pronounced with Xbox. Microsoft was the first console maker to expand its reach into PC gaming to attract new users and revenue, particularly as it stands at the lower end of the console spectrum. This strategy has dramatically impacted Xbox’s hardware sales, which have been consistently declining for several quarters. To compensate for the downturn, Microsoft has begun releasing its games on both PC and PlayStation, effectively addressing the challenges facing its hardware lineup.
Microsoft might legit publish more games on PS5 this year than Sony does. 😂February 12, 2025
Ryan McCaffrey, IGN’s Executive Editor, noted the peculiar position Xbox currently finds itself in, asking if anyone would have truly believed five years ago that this would be the reality. It’s possible that 2025 could mark the first year where Xbox releases more titles on PlayStation than Sony itself.
Microsoft continues to bring well-known multi-platform titles such as Call of Duty and Minecraft to PlayStation, but it’s also set to release exclusive titles like Forza Horizon 5, Indiana Jones, and Age of Empires on the platform. There are even rumors of additional releases for PlayStation in both the near and distant future. Trusted sources have indicated that Hellblade 2 could launch on PlayStation 5 as soon as this April. It’s entirely plausible that forthcoming Xbox titles like South of Midnight, Avowed, and even Fable could also appear on PlayStation, as Xbox assesses Windows PC and Xbox Series X|S as a limiting factor for its immediate revenue goals. This leaves many Xbox fans worried about the sustainability of their platform investments.
I just landed and have no idea what happened during the PlayStation stream. How would you rate it?February 12, 2025
Destin Legarie, a content creator and former IGN staff member, surveyed opinions on the PlayStation presentation, with numerous responses rating it “D.” There appears to be growing frustration within the PlayStation community due to a lack of transparency regarding the company’s long-term vision for its first-party game studios.
This year, PlayStation is set to release high-profile projects, including the open-world ninja game Ghost of Yōtei and Hideo Kojima’s Death Stranding 2, but updates from renowned studios like Sony Santa Monica, Insomniac, and Naughty Dog typically create the most buzz. While Naughty Dog has recently unveiled its next project, a sci-fi title, Insomniac also just launched Spider-Man 2 on PC.
Yet, an undeniable truth looms: all these titles will eventually reach Windows PC, whether through platforms like Steam or others.
All we’re doing now is basically arguing about timed exclusives. Embrace PC. Get everything.February 13, 2025
Content creator Gaz shared an insightful comment, pointing out that PC has evolved into the ultimate platform for gamers seeking the broadest range of titles. Steam stands out by integrating exclusives from PC, PlayStation, and Xbox, and with Steam’s commitment to its Linux-based SteamOS, the potential for a more conventional gaming console from Steam is increasingly possible.
As someone who spent most of my life unable to afford a gaming PC, it’s disheartening to witness PlayStation and Xbox seemingly stepping away from their respective ecosystems. Not every gaming enthusiast can invest in a powerful gaming PC, and furthermore, not everyone desires one. Windows is often cumbersome to navigate on a couch with a controller; even though Xbox VP Jason Ronald has pledged to enhance this experience. Currently, interacting with Windows is far from intuitive on devices like the ASUS ROG Ally and Lenovo Legion Go, let alone from a couch.
For now, it appears unlikely that either PlayStation or Xbox will fully abandon their console ecosystems.

In a recent tweet, gaming news curator Hazzador highlighted that Sony’s latest financial report revealed a +16% year-on-year growth in hardware shipments and a +7% increase in active users. The success of the PS5 Pro likely contributed to Sony’s strong performance during the holiday season, but it remains to be seen if PlayStation can maintain this momentum in light of the increasing influence of PC gaming. A key factor for 2025 will be Grand Theft Auto 6, which is not launching simultaneously on PC and may prompt significant upgrades from players on older consoles like the Xbox One and PS4.

While Xbox has not disclosed its active console user numbers, it’s likely they are declining as more gamers transition to PC. Xbox hardware sales have consistently dropped, particularly as the company seems to have scaled back its marketing efforts and failed to capitalize on Black Friday deals last year. Nonetheless, Xbox has committed to the development of next-gen console hardware. Recently, I’ve learned that the next generation of Xbox hardware has progressed beyond its early stages and received full approval and budgeting. While we might not see an announcement regarding hardware plans soon, what intrigues me is how Xbox will encourage developers to align with its ambitions on PC. So far, developers have largely ignored the Microsoft Store for distributing their PC games, which poses challenges for Xbox’s ability to sustain its ecosystem.
And today’s State of Play for PlayStation showcased more upcoming Xbox games than ever before, including two Game Pass Day One games. https://t.co/Tb4g87PGXyFebruary 13, 2025
Indeed, these are truly unusual times for gamers.
