Experienced offensive coordinator Philip Montgomery is set to take on the role of offensive coordinator for Virginia Tech, according to sources close to ESPN. A formal announcement is anticipated on Monday.

Montgomery, who previously served as the head coach for the Tulsa Golden Hurricane, has a rich history of coordinating successful offenses at both Auburn and Baylor. Most recently, he served as the co-offensive coordinator for the Birmingham Stallions last season.

During his eight-year tenure at Tulsa, Montgomery compiled a record of 43-53, including a notable 10-3 season in 2016, which featured four bowl game appearances.

Montgomery ascended to head coach after demonstrating his ability to drive a potent offense as offensive coordinator at Baylor from 2008 to 2014.

While at Baylor, he served as the quarterback coach and co-offensive coordinator to Robert Griffin III, guiding him during his Heisman Trophy-winning season in 2011. From 2012 to 2014, he held the position of sole offensive coordinator, helping Baylor achieve the top ranking in total offense nationally in his last two years, and a second-place finish in 2012.

In a historic achievement during the 2016 season at Tulsa, Montgomery led the team to become the first FBS squad to feature a 3,000-yard passer, Dane Evans, alongside two 1,000-yard rushers, James Flanders and D’Angelo Brewer.

In addition to his time with Griffin at Baylor, Montgomery has also coached other notable quarterbacks, including Big 12 Player of the Year Bryce Petty, Nick Florence at Baylor, as well as Kevin Kolb and Case Keenum at Houston.

He steps in to fill the position previously held by Tyler Bowen, who departed to join Ohio State as the offensive line coach and run-game coordinator.
