Pope Francis is currently receiving care for a “complex clinical situation” and will remain hospitalized until his health allows for discharge, according to the Vatican.
The 88-year-old pontiff was admitted to Gemelli Hospital in Rome last Friday to undergo tests and treatment for bronchitis.
In a statement released on Monday, the Vatican indicated that the Pope has developed a “polymicrobial infection” affecting his respiratory system, prompting an adjustment in his medical treatment.
Prior to his hospitalization, the Pope exhibited bronchitis symptoms for several days and had been unable to deliver speeches at scheduled events, delegating that responsibility to other officials.
Vatican spokesman Matteo Bruni informed the media on Monday that the Pope remains optimistic despite his condition.
In a brief update, it was noted: “All tests conducted so far suggest a complex clinical picture requiring appropriate hospitalization.”
Over the weekend, the Vatican reported that the Pope’s condition was stable and that he has been advised to take “complete rest” to facilitate his recovery.
He was unable to conduct his usual weekly prayer service in St. Peter’s Square on Sunday or preside over a special mass for artists in honor of the Catholic Church’s Jubilee Year.
The Argentine Pope has been leading the Roman Catholic Church for nearly 12 years.
He previously spent three nights in the same hospital in March 2023 receiving treatment for bronchitis.
In December of that year, he had to cancel his trip to the United Arab Emirates for the COP28 climate summit due to another illness.
Throughout his life, the Pope has faced various health challenges, including undergoing surgery to remove part of one of his lungs at the age of 21.
