NBA Commissioner Adam Silver has recently faced backlash following an underwhelming NBA All-Star Weekend.

The new format implemented for the All-Star Game drew significant criticism, particularly from Warriors star Draymond Green, as fans and analysts expressed dissatisfaction over the prolonged trend of non-competitive All-Star games characterized by a lack of defensive play.

This year’s event introduced a fresh four-team mini-tournament, with matches played to 40 points.

Interestingly, one of the participating teams was composed not of All-Stars, but of winners from the Rising Stars Challenge, making up Team Candice Parker.

Ultimately, Shaquille O’Neal’s team emerged victorious in this new format, with Stephen Curry of the Warriors named MVP of the event.

This concluded a weekend in San Francisco that left many participants feeling discontent with the direction of the NBA under Silver’s oversight.

“The NBA needs a new Commissioner,” WFAN host Brandon Tierney commented on X. “Silver is driving the league into the ground. It’s unrecognizable.”

The weekend was marred by several issues, including player complaints about lengthy breaks between games.

“Honestly, I wasn’t a fans of it at all,” stated Hawks’ star Trae Young to reporters. “The games felt too brief, and it seemed like they extended the play time for TV purposes with the breaks.”

In other news, G-League standout Mac McClung triumphed in his third consecutive dunk contest as several top-tier stars opted out. LeBron James withdrew at the last minute due to ankle and foot discomfort, while Timberwolves star Anthony Edwards sat out due to a groin injury, leaving their spots vacant for potential replacements.

“I didn’t think All-Star Weekend could get worse, yet somehow it did. Kevin Hart got more airtime than the All-Stars themselves,” remarked NBA analyst Kevin O’Connor. “With LeBron and Edwards not playing, the long breaks disrupted the flow of the game. There was a 20-minute intermission for TNT right at the finale.”

Bill Simmons from The Ringer expressed his dissatisfaction regarding the weekend, emphasizing that the All-Star Game has been a lingering issue for the league. “I’m not sure how NBA All-Star Weekend could have gone worse,” Simmons wrote on X. “This has been a problem since the mid-2000s, and the NBA seems to be in denial about it. Every February they suffer a major setback. It’s almost as if the weekend was designed specifically for everyone to complain.”

One unnamed general manager criticized Silver’s apparent obsession with tournaments, including the NBA Cup and Play-in tournament, stating that these initiatives have not been beneficial for the league.

“Adam Silver is fixated on tournaments,” the GM told WireHoops. “Play-in, in-season, and now All-Star. They haven’t demonstrated any positive impact on our league.”

Despite the criticism, not all feedback was negative. Thunder star Shai Gilgeous-Alexander described the new format for the All-Star Game as a “step in the right direction” in terms of competitiveness, though he did enjoy the breaks.

Knicks guard Jalen Brunson found the format interesting and distinctive but suggested that the games could be extended to 50 points for more excitement.
