China’s President Xi Jinping stated that China and Russia are “true friends who have weathered challenges together” following a video conference with President Vladimir Putin on Monday, as reported by state media in China.
Xi’s remarks appear strategically aimed at countering speculation suggesting that the Trump administration might succeed in creating discord between the two nations. The call took place on the anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022, a pivotal moment after which China has become Russia’s foremost international ally amidst Western sanctions and isolation.
During the call, Xi emphasized that historical and current contexts confirm that China and Russia are steadfast neighbors and reliable partners committed to mutual support and growth. He expressed, “The history and reality illustrate that China and Russia are good neighbors who will remain close, steadfast friends who endure through various trials, supporting each other and growing together.”
Xi further declared that the relationship between China and Russia is not influenced by any external parties, which is widely interpreted as a critique of the United States. He affirmed that both countries are committed to a long-term foreign policy trajectory.
The Kremlin echoed this sentiment in their statement, referring to the discussion between Xi and Putin as “warm and friendly.” The Kremlin dismissed the notion that President Trump could create division between the two countries, highlighting that the bond between Russia and China is a significant stabilizing factor in global affairs and is resistant to outside influences.
