As a result, the S.E.C. has scaled back its efforts to oversee the burgeoning cryptocurrency market, disrupting initiatives in other institutions aimed at safeguarding workers’ rights.

However, the consequences of these significant changes are clear: regulatory agencies designed to defend the interests of average Americans, workers, and homeowners are being severely weakened, according to consumer advocacy groups.

“During the Trump administration, federal protections for consumers are being swiftly dismantled through a haphazard process,” stated Adam Levitin, a financial regulation specialist at Georgetown Law. “This represents deregulation through staff reductions.”
