The Trump administration is implementing a shutdown of electric vehicle (EV) chargers across all federal properties and is anticipated to liquidate the General Services Administration’s (GSA) recently acquired electric vehicles.

The GSA oversees the management of federally owned buildings and operates the EV charging stations located in these facilities. A total of 8,000 charging ports are available for both government-owned and personal electric vehicles of federal employees.

The Verge reports that an internal announcement regarding this decision is expected next week. An email circulated by the GSA to regional offices has already revealed planned actions:

“In alignment with the current administration’s directives, we have been informed that all GSA-owned charging stations are deemed non-essential.”

The GSA is currently deliberating on the timing for terminating existing network contracts that support the operation of these EV chargers. After these contracts are canceled, the stations will cease functioning and be “disconnected at the power source,” according to the email. Other charging stations will start to be deactivated next week.

“Once these charging stations are out of service, neither government-owned vehicles nor privately owned vehicles will be able to utilize them.”

Colorado Public Radio was the first to report that it obtained the email detailing the closure of EV chargers at the Denver Federal Center, which contains 22 charging stations at 11 different sites.

The administration’s actions have resulted in the removal of the GSA’s fleet electrification webpage completely. (An archived version is accessible here.)

A source from The Verge also indicated that the GSA intends to divest the electric vehicles purchased during the Biden administration, although it remains unclear whether these vehicles will be sold or stored.
