The Black History Month celebration at the White House on Thursday exuded the grandeur reminiscent of previous events. Attendees enjoyed champagne and delectable lamb chops accompanied by collard greens. The vibrant atmosphere was evident as guests reveled in their invitations, snapping numerous selfies. The excitement peaked when President Trump entered alongside legendary golfer Tiger Woods, prompting cheers and eager phone cameras from the crowd.

However, the mood in the East Room was marked by a noticeable contrast.

While President Trump acknowledged the significant contributions of Black Americans during his speech, his actions since taking office have systematically undermined federal initiatives designed to address inequality. He has controversially claimed that the strides made due to the civil rights movement have painted white individuals as victims. Moreover, he notably attributed a tragic plane crash in the Potomac River to diversity initiatives within the Federal Aviation Administration.

During the event, President Trump sought to express gratitude to the Black community by highlighting figures he views as exemplars of Black American advancement.

“Let me ask you,” Mr. Trump began, “is there anyone quite like our Tiger?”

The president, currently involved in discussions for a lucrative golf merger with Woods, mentioned him frequently throughout his roughly 20-minute address. In addition to Woods, Trump also recognized other iconic Black athletes, including Muhammad Ali and Kobe Bryant.

Engaging with an audience of over 400 guests, Trump, who made inroads among Black voters in the recent 2024 elections, stated, “We’re going to collaborate with you.”

Despite his comments, the president’s speech lacked acknowledgment of pressing issues that have long affected the Black community, such as high poverty rates, the wealth and wage gap between Black and white Americans, and ongoing gun violence. However, he did promise to erect statues celebrating Black American figures in a new “National Garden of American Heroes.”
