Tropical Cyclone Zelia Strikes North Western Australia
Zelia made landfall 34 miles northeast of Port Hedland, generating winds comparable to a Category 4 Atlantic hurricane. Local residents were advised to remain indoors to protect themselves from intense rainfall and damaging winds.
“Port Hedland is not likely to experience the extremely destructive winds from the cyclone’s eyewall; however, damaging wind gusts are still expected this afternoon and into the evening on the eastern side of the cyclone’s path. A potentially dangerous storm surge could lead to flash flooding in coastal regions.” “This is serious.” “We are prepared to face the aftermath of this cyclone, which could produce winds up to 290 km/h and over 500 millimeters of rain throughout the Pilbara. It’s vital that affected communities remain vigilant, as the dangers won’t diminish immediately after the cyclone passes.”
