Gardening enthusiasts are always looking for innovative ways to nurture their plants, experimenting with various ingredients like eggshell powder and coffee grounds. Among these methods, a homemade fertilizer rich in chlorophyll, often dubbed “green gold,” is rapidly becoming popular among plant lovers.

Dr. Cristhian Josue Cedeno from the Technical University of Manabí has provided valuable insights into how nutrient-dense solutions can significantly impact the growth and health of plants.

This research supports the premise that plants are intricate living beings, rather than mere decorations; they thrive with scientifically informed care.

Chlorophyll-Rich Fertilizer

Vibrant, lush leaves brim with chlorophyll, the natural pigment responsible for the green coloration of plants. When leaves turn yellow or dull, it often indicates underlying nutrient deficiencies that standard watering methods cannot remedy.

Chlorophyll-rich fertilizers can bridge this nutritional gap by enhancing the plant’s ability to photosynthesize. A particularly promising organic option is LVEB (bovine manure vermicompost leachate), a liquid resulting from composting cattle waste processed through earthworms.

This nutrient-packed solution improves soil health, fosters beneficial microbial activity, and delivers essential minerals like magnesium, which directly contribute to chlorophyll production.

In contrast to synthetic fertilizers, LVEB naturally bolsters plant well-being, making it a sustainable choice for both home gardeners and larger-scale farmers.

“The 1:30 dilution of the LVEB demonstrated significantly greater growth metrics—such as plant height, stem diameter, leaf count, total chlorophyll levels, and an impressive yield increase of 1.28 t/ha—compared to crops fed with chemical fertilizers,” noted Cedeno Solorzano, co-author of the study.

The Essential Role of Magnesium

“Magnesium is vital for plant metabolism, serving as the central atom in chlorophyll molecules,” explained Shaul O. from Bar-Ilan University.

Gardeners faced with unhealthy plants should recognize the significance of magnesium, a crucial mineral found in every chlorophyll molecule.

Yellowing leaves or sluggish growth may indicate a magnesium deficiency. Incorporating dark, leafy materials in homemade fertilizers can provide a direct source of this essential nutrient.

Enhancing Soil Health with Chlorophyll Fertilizers

While proper photosynthesis is critical, nurturing the roots and soil is equally important. Healthy soil lays the groundwork for robust plant development by influencing nutrient uptake, water retention, and disease resistance.

“Organic amendments offer readily available carbon and nutrients that boost soil microbial biomass and activity,” stated H. J. McGovern from the Scottish Crop Research Institute.

“This stimulation of microbial life not only speeds up the decomposition of organic matter but also increases the availability of vital nutrients for plants, promoting enhanced growth and soil vitality.”

Homemade chlorophyll fertilizer functions similarly to other organic amendments by nourishing beneficial microbes, fostering a healthier soil environment that facilitates better access to water and nutrients for plant roots.

Crafting Chlorophyll Fertilizer

Gardeners often select the most vibrant leaves from evergreen shrubs, blending them with about one quart of water to create a potent, dark mixture.

After straining the blended concoction to eliminate larger debris, a brief bain-marie heating for 5 to 10 minutes helps release essential pigments. This straightforward recipe can replace regular watering routines every couple of weeks.

Monitoring Progress

Observing vibrant leaves can be a clear indicator of plant improvement. Droopy or wilted plants may display renewed strength following consistent use of the chlorophyll-rich solution.

It’s also essential to monitor soil moisture levels and drainage to prevent overwatering, which can suffocate roots. A careful balance of appropriate watering, sunlight, and nutrients is crucial for maintaining healthy plants.

A Sustainable Approach

“Using organic amendments improves essential soil properties such as structure, porosity, and moisture retention,” noted the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).

These enhancements lead to a more vibrant microbial community that improves nutrient cycling and overall soil fertility.

For many individuals inclined towards organic practices, adopting homemade chlorophyll solutions minimizes reliance on chemical fertilizers. This method utilizes readily available plant materials, making the process both cost-effective and environmentally friendly.

Embracing the concept of green gold can be a motivating strategy to revive neglected houseplants. The process is quick, and the positive effects manifest in the form of healthier leaves and stronger stems.

The findings of this study are published in the journal La Técnica.
